Three things that break blinds on this coast

Salt air

If you are near the sea — and in Villajoyosa, El Campello or El Albir most people are — salt is the single biggest cause of failure. It builds up in the side guides, mixes with grit and acts like sandpaper. Meanwhile the shaft inside the box corrodes. The blind starts to feel heavy, then noisy, then one day the shaft gives way and the whole curtain drops.

The good news is that this is slow and it warns you. A blind that is starting to feel stiff needs a cheap service. A blind that has been ignored for three years needs replacing.

Wind

The levante, the easterly, is what destroys awnings here. Almost every broken awning we repair was left open when a gust came through, usually with nobody at home. If your awning is motorised, a wind sensor is not an accessory — it is the thing that stops you paying for a new one.

Houses that sit empty

A mechanism that does not move for six months does not stay pristine, it seizes. Guides collect dust and damp, the grease on the shaft dries out and what worked in October is stiff in June. It is the classic first-day-of-the-holiday phone call, and it is almost always cleaning and lubrication rather than new parts.
